4 Avatar Sequels Will Cost More Than A $1 BILLION

James Cameron recently announced that he’ll start filming Avatar 2 next week. However, he’s not planning to film just one Avatar movie. Cameron is going to work on all four Avatar sequels (Avatar 2 to 5), simultaneously. Sounds impossible but if James Cameron pulls it off, he’ll be making history by becoming the first director ever to shoot 4 movies with such a staggering budget, consecutively. These Avatar sequels will hit theaters over the course of next 8 years and it is estimated that Cameron will need more than a BILLION dollars ($250 Million Per Sequel) to make them. Director Peter Jackson famously directed all 3 Lord of the Rings movies at the same time. Of course, extensive reshoots also took place and all of that resulted in a massively popular and successful trilogy. But, the Avatar franchise is quite different and on a lot more sophisticated level when it comes to time, technique, technology, and budget. Deadline reported that while there is no solid figure on the papers yet, but Avatar movies’ collective budget will be well over a billion dollars.

Fox produced the first Avatar movie which hit theaters back in 2009 and is still on board to produce the upcoming sequels. The reason being the first movie made $2.78 Billion worldwide and still holds the title of the highest grossing movie of all timeTitanic, another movie made by James Cameron currently holds the second spot ($2.18 Billion) on that list. In other words, James Cameron has made not just one but 2 highest grossing movies ever and with that monumental achievement in mind, producers won’t hesitate in putting their money on the table for the Avatar sequels. Besides, if all four sequels manage to earn even half the amount the first Avatar movie made, the producers will be happy.

Currently, the Avatar sequels don’t have official titles but they do have set release dates. Avatar 2 is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2020, followed by Avatar 3 on December 17, 2021Avatar 4 on December 20, 2024, and the franchise will be concluded with Avatar 5 on December 19, 2025.
